Sustainable Concept Design

BXG believes in the concept of front loading sustainability and climate resilience into Community, Building and Home Designs. All Green Building Rating Tools include to a varying degree the importance of efficient thermal envelope design and passive solar principles in a quest to improve the project’s energy performance. We optimize design by offering out-of-the-box thinking and energy conservation measures, identifying seasonal sun path directions for passive solar gain, seasonal wind directions for airflow, optimized cross ventilation and stack effect for passive cooling over the summer, achieve airtightness and high levels of insulation or thermal envelope design.

Passive Solar

Passive solar buildings are designed to keep occupants at a comfortable temperature using the home’s physical structure and site conditions alone, requiring little or no purchased energy for heating, cooling and ventilation. Although the specific design approach to passive homes may differ, its core elements – good solar management, high levels of insulation, well controlled ventilation and the careful use of massive (high mass) materials – are common to all. It is also about simplicity and robustness – typically, the designs have few moving parts, require minimal maintenance and have no mechanical systems.

It’s important to get your principles right, all the way from the get-go. The Building Excellence Group is often asked to review sets of existing drawings and specifications to see how they comply with a green building rating system. Inevitably this leads to recommendations for building design tweaks and component upgrades, but in reality it would be possible to make the building achieve the same thermal and environmental performance at a reduced price by simply getting the following features optimised:

The Building Excellence Group is able to help you get these initial concepts right, setting you up to easily achieve Green Building Thermal standards without the need to invest extra in building component upgrade or retrofit.
